Best Engagement Locations In Colorado | Engagement Photography

Colorado is most known for being home to the Rocky Mountains, but that’s not all the state has to offer. If you’ve decided to take your elopement or engagement photography in Colorado it’s probably because the state undoubtedly has one of the most diverse and world-renowned natural sites in the country. Maybe you’re an out-of-state couple trying to figure things out from across the country, or just looking for some extra tips on where to look in your own backyard. Hoping this info piece gives some insight on what to expect when planning your Colorado Elopement or Engagement.

Always keep in mind how private or in-the-moment you’re looking to be for your elopement or engagement photography/videography session. Some of these locations draw large crowds but you’ll still be able to sneak away off a trail into your own private space. To keep these locations sustainable and enjoyable for future generations please practice “Leave No Trace Principles” when visiting these delicate ecosystems. Always make sure to research with your local county office on necessary permits before scheduling your shoot with your photographer or videographer.

Four Locations Within a 2-hour Drive From Denver You Should Consider For Your Upcoming Engagement Or Elopement

#1 - Rocky Mountain National Park

Welcome to the Rockies! Rocky Mountain National Park is without a doubt Colorado’s #1 attraction. Drawing large crowds in the summer months, and having limited access to areas in the winter. Every year RMNP is a highly sought after location for out of state couples eloping or having their engagement photos taken. Popular locations for engagement or elopements in RMNP are Trail Ridge Road and Dream Lake. Always make sure to take proper supplies when hiking out into the high-elevation exposure of the Rockies. This means proper clothing, snacks and lamps if you plan on staying out after sunset. $50 Single Session Photography Permit required through RMNP NPS and $25 Day Pass to enter the park.

#2 - Boulder’s Lost Gulch Overlook on Flagstaff Mountain

We could easily list other nearby Boulder Engagement or Elopement locations like Flat Irons in Chataqua Park or the nearby Indian Peak Wilderness - but Lost Gulch is undeniably the most easy to access with high bang-for-buck views. Just a 20 minute drive from the heart of Boulder, you’ll find yourself driving up Flagstaff Mountain and taking a quick walk to the west-facing overlook spot. Photography session permit will be required through the City Of Boulder. Paid parking available at the Overlook lot.

#3 - Garden Of The Gods in Colorado Springs

Garden Of The Gods is one of those places that you’ll find at the top of almost every travel guide in the state next to Rocky Mountain National Park. This 1,334-acre natural park is free to enter throughout the year and has been voted the best city park in the country. It’s known for it’s uniquely red mars-like rock formations and sprawling natural features and wildlife. Easily accessible from both Denver and Colorado Springs. No fees or permits are required to enter or have a photography session in Garden Of The Gods, but there has been speculation of a potential change to this in the near future. Keep yourself informed on this ongoing situation.

#4 - Paint Mines Interpretive Park in Calhan, Colorado

Paint Mines Interpretive Park is one of Colorado’s most unique open spaces for engagement or elopement photos. With four miles of trails to explore and incredibly dynamic landscapes and geological formations - what the Paint Mines lacks in elevation it makes up for in it’s own charming way. Easily accessible from both Denver and Colorado Springs. This is also the only location on the list that does not require your photographer to register a permit with the Park Office - always double check as these rules may change over time.
